Dalhousie Global Surgery Office
The Global Surgery Office at Dalhousie University, directed by Dr C. Marius Hoogerboord, pursues “global excellence in surgical education, research and advocacy through partnership and collaboration”. Efforts to date have included partnership with the National University of Rwanda and the development there of an integrated surgical skills and simulation facility and course.
An relationship with the University of Dodoma Medical School, Tanzania, was established in 2014 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding. “Our goal is to assist with development of a skills centre as well as with technical and didactic teaching of residents and medical students. We are very interested in telementoring and simulation training and we hope to develop this as the basis of our involvement with Dodoma. We also identified several interesting research questions that we want to pursue with our partners and their surgical residents.”
The Global Surgery Office has a strong partnership with the Dalhousie Department of Anaesthesia which has been an international leader in promoting safer anesthesia in low and medium resource countries. See: Global Health in Anesthesia for more details, including information on the course designed for Canadian and international anesthetists interested in learning more about the issues of providing and teaching safe anesthesia, where resources are limited. This year’s course is May 29-June, 1 2014.
