Lancet Initiative on Global Surgery
The April, 2015 Special Edition of Lancet Global Health is dedicated to Global Surgery. Lancet leaders have undertaken a bold initiative to collect research from diverse fields to demonstrate the compelling urgent need to put surgical care front and centre in health care policy in low resource countries. Lancet has brought convincing research together from diverse domains, many outside surgery. The ensemble of data is powerful, and the message is being heard in the highest levels of WHO and national decision-makers.
One lead article “Global surgery as an equal partner in health: no longer the neglected stepchild” John G Meara, Sarah L M Greenberg, is particularly powerful in explaining why the role of surgery is increasingly being viewed as central.
